Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’ is perhaps the next-big-thing to emerge from exotic gardens and into mainstream horticulture. It is certainly a BIG-THING in any case. A horticultural monster. Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’ is an original collection gathered from the Shei-Pa area of the Central Mountains, Taiwan. The massive palmate leaves, rivalling those of Gunnera manicata, are gorgeously lobed to well over a metre wide. New growth and the under-sides of the leaves are covered with a beige indumentum (woolly hairs to you and me). The tall upright stems can reach 2m in rich well-drained soil from ground level in a season. Winter protection will lead to the creation of a monster...........
